Step 5 (second bread + seal): Apply a second round of HA or hydrating essence, then immediately follow with a thin layer of an occlusive. Good options: a thin swipe of plain Vaseline, ceramide-rich moisturizer with dimethicone, or squalane oil.


Common Mistakes

Applying HA to completely dry skin in a dry environment. No surface moisture means HA pulls from deeper skin layers instead. Apply to damp skin or follow immediately with occlusion.

Skipping the final occlusive step. This is the most commonly skipped and most important step. Without it, you're layering humectants with no seal and still losing water overnight.

Not waiting between retinol and moisturizer. Allow retinol 60–90 seconds to begin absorbing before applying moisturizer on top. Applying immediately dilutes the retinol before it penetrates.
